List of 25 possible solutions to test anxiety -- Written by Ben and Shannon

  1. Reduce the weight of tests on final grade
  2. Convince students that more extracurriculars does not translate into better chances of getting into college.
  3. Show students that taking more classes is not necessarily better
  4. Teach students how to help each other improve test scores rather than comparing them to each other.
  5. Have students reflect on positive parts of themselves to reduce test anxiety and bolster confidence
  6. Teach students about the importance of relaxation
  7. Let students know that asking for an extension on a large project or paper is not a sign of weakness, and teachers are usually understanding
  8. Have teachers coordinate their test dates so that tests are more evenly spread out
  9. Encourage schools to start later so that students can get more sleep
  10. Convince students of the importance of sleep and health
  11. Encourage schools to hire tutors that can help students that are falling behind catch up and get ready for tests
  12. Try and create a balanced schedule
    1. e.g. If you are taking an AP science then you do not need to be taking an AP language
  13. Encourage students to set up a classwide study guide so that everyone can contribute information and study the material together
  14. Have teachers create study guides/list of topics that they are going to test so students know what to expect
  15. Give students sample questions of what will be on the test so they know what to expect
  16. Teachers can have office hours before a test so that anxious students can meet with the teacher and ask any lingering questions
  17. Have a class day be designated to studying and asking questions in order to encourage students to work and study together
  18. Schedule tests for Tuesdays so that students can study over the weekend and then ask questions on Monday
  19. Designate a time (at least once a week) during the schedule for students to meet with teachers without sports or extracurriculars getting in the way
  20. Study early and study often → the more confident a student is from how much they studied, the more likely that they will be more relaxed and perform better on the test
  21. Organize a study group outside of school so that students can help each other and address any glaring issues or holes that they have in the curriculum
  22. Give students who suffer from test anxiety extra time during tests so they won’t feel so pressured
  23. Stress to students that tests are not their entire grade and encourage them (if they are anxious) to go talk to the teacher, peers, or a guidance counselor
  24. On the day before a test, have teachers let other teachers know so that they can assign an appropriate amount of homework to allow time to study
  25. Tell students about a test well in advance (or have a test calendar) so that they can plan their studying to feel confident when the test comes around
