Out of all my preliminary sketches, this version of the logo seemed strongest. So I completely redid it in Illustrator from scratch and changed a few things. I added a stand to the globe to give it a more "mappy" feel. The earlier globe did imply that it represented Earth, but depicting a globe on a stand made it much more clear that it was a representation of the Earth and a tool that served a similar purpose as an atlas. I also drew the atlas (book) so that it had rounded corners to invoke a more friendly feel and drew the figure's hand supporting the book to make the figure seem more connected to the book. I chose an Old Style serif font for the text so that it matched the fonts of stereotypical "ancient" map images to invoke the feeling that the Journalism website was exploring something new with their content, similar to how old maps were usually unfinished and ready to be filled in by adventurous explorers.
